Waterloo Regional Police have laid drug charges against two Cambridge residents after executing search warrants at businesses in Kitchener and Cambridge that were alleged to be selling magic mushrooms.
Members of the Direct Action Response Team executed search warrants Saturday at businesses near Victoria Street South and Park Street in Kitchener and King Street East and Waterloo Street North in Cambridge, according to a Waterloo Regional Police news release.
Investigators seized a large quantity of psilocybin (magic mushrooms) in various forms and Canadian currency, according to the release.
A 23-year-old male and a 32-year-old female, both from Cambridge, were arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Police said the sale (trafficking) of psilocybin is a criminal offence as psilocybin is categorized as a Schedule III controlled substance.
“Businesses engaged in selling these products are operating unlawfully, and the substances they offer are neither regulated nor subject to standardized quality control measures,” police said.
The accused are scheduled to appear in court in May.
