COLUMBUS, OH (WLIO) – It’s been three months since voters approved the legalization of marijuana for adults, but there is no yet word when it will be legal to buy it in the state.

Governor DeWine is calling on the Ohio House to pass legislation that the Ohio Senate passed in December. That bill would increase the sales tax from 10% to 15% for marijuana. It would also set up legal sales sooner rather than this fall. Ohio became the 26th state to legalize marijuana for adults. DeWine and other lawmakers are worried that people may be turning to the black market for their marijuana, which could be laced with other drugs, instead of it being regulated through the state.

“We need to do it in a way that is safe and what we have now is a situation where you have a black market that is further expanding in the state. Where this product is many times being sold, people don’t know if it has pesticides used in the growing of it. Don’t know what the potency is of it. So, we have to change that and again the only ones that can do that is the legislature,” says DeWine.

The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control Board has proposed rules that would allow medical marijuana dispensaries to apply to get a dual license to sell both medical and recreational marijuana.
