The Village of Holly’s recreation program is getting a boost from one of Michigan’s marijuana retailers.

Lume Cannabis Company recently announced a $50,000 investment in Holly’s parks department and other programs including a scholarship fund. The contribution includes a portion of annual sales at Lume’s Holly store on Grange Hall Road, $10,000 to the village’s parks department and $7,000 for new playground equipment.

“Lume has been an incredible partner since their doors opened last year and the company’s investment in our community is allowing us to create family-friendly amenities at our parks,” Village of Holly Manager Jerry Walker stated in a news release. “With this funding, we also will be able to support a scholarship for those pursuing college degrees to become police officers and firefighters as well as Fourth of July fireworks.”

Michigan communities with cannabis retailers also benefit financially by sharing in tax revenue generated by sales.

Lume’s Holly store opened last year. The company has 38 locations in Michigan, including four other stores in Oakland County — Walled Lake, Berkley, Southfield and Oxford.

“At Lume, we are dedicated to being a good neighbor and serving our loyal customers,” Doug Hellyar, president and COO of Lume Cannabis Company, stated in the release. “The Village of Holly has been so welcoming since we opened and we are thrilled to have an opportunity to help support the community by investing in local parks and scholarships.”
