LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) – Saturday is 4/20, which has become an unofficial holiday for cannabis enthusiasts.

Recreational marijuana now is legal for adults under Michigan law and traffic safety officials want to make sure users celebrate responsibly by not getting behind the wheel while high.

“Those who plan to use cannabis on 4/20 — or any day — should not drive,” said Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning Director Katie Bower. “If you find yourself drug-impaired, find a sober ride home.”

Taxi services, ride share services, designated drivers and public transportation may be options for intoxicated drivers who need a ride home on Saturday.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says state law prohibits drivers from getting behind the wheel when they are intoxicated by alcohol, drugs, marijuana or any other substance that impairs driving ability.

Bower said drivers high on marijuana pose a danger to themselves and other motorists. Cannabis impairs drivers by slowing reaction times and reducing cognitive performance.

“If you are impaired by drugs or alcohol, you should never get behind the wheel,” Bower said. “We are asking people to use good judgement, obey the law and make safe choices when driving. Your decisions don’t just affect you — they affect everyone on the road.”
