Inflation is a big deal right now. While the increase in basic prices have leveled off some, the fact remains, most of our basic needs have increased exponentially in the past few years.
In fact, just in the past year, prices have increased for just about everything by 3.4%, which was up from 3.8% the year before. But there’s one industry in Michigan that not only avoided any inflation increase, it defied the trend, and actually got cheaper. That industry, is Cannabis.
Basic groceries are tough to come by at a reasonable price. I went shopping just for a week’s worth of items the other day, and what used to cost me about $50 is now closer to $80 or $90. And it’s not like I’m buying fancy stuff. I reverted back to college brain, and bough off-brand products, and despite my personal views on things, I’m buying the produce with ALL the chemicals in it. No organic blueberries for this guy.
It’s tough times for people who continue to live check-to-check, but for many of us, it’s getting easier to cope, because despite the increase in groceries and other goods, marijuana is actually cheaper in Michigan than it was four years ago.
Following the pandemic, nearly everything skyrocketed in price, but the cannabis industry in Michigan cratered… but in a good way. It’s not a National product, so it’s immune to any national tax laws, and at least American cannabis companies can’t be traded publicly. So the price of bud is literally a result of the local climate and competition.
And in Michigan, competition is strong.
What is the Cost of Cannabis in Michigan Now?
In 2020, Cannabis was around $419.39 per ounce, which is pretty steep. In fact, it was the third most expensive state to buy marijuana behind Illinois and Maine.
But things changed quickly, and now, Michigan has some of the cheapest cannabis prices in the country, and you can get an ounce for just $91.71.
That’s not only immune to inflation, it literally defied the trends, and dropped at an insane rate while everything else increased. And we can thank the number of dispensaries, and cultivators in the state for keeping our cost down… also, we don’t charge a 50% tax on it like Illinois.
So if you wanna support an industry that isn’t gouging us out of every nickel and dime we have, the cannabis industry is where it’s at. It’s just unfortunate that the side effects of cannabis just make us more hungry… which means even more groceries.
