Cannabis sales set record in 2023, best-ever month in December

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Massachusetts saw record sales of adult-use cannabis for 2023 including the most sales in December.

According to a news release from the Cannabis Control Commission, marijuana businesses in Massachusetts set a new annual gross sales record in 2023, of more than $1.56 billion. It was an increase of approximately 5 percent over 2022 with $78 million.

December ranked the best-ever month with $140.1 million in sales since the first two adult-use retail stores opened in November 2018. The Commission notes that there are 338 total marijuana retailers and 21 businesses allowed to offer delivery in the state as of December 31, 2023.

Medical marijuana sales totaled $225 million in 2023 for more than 97,000 patients from 103 medical marijuana treatment centers. According to Massachusetts law, patients 21 years of age or older may possess, a 60-day supply or up to 10 ounces.

“This continued growth confirms that Massachusetts’ regulated marijuana industry is still a maturing market,” said Acting Chair Ava Concepcion. “As more retailers and delivery licensees come online, flower prices start to stabilize, and the stigma surrounding cannabis slowly dissipates—legal, tested products are becoming more accessible, affordable, and approachable than ever before, and that’s reflected in the multiple sales records licensees broke in 2023.”

According to the Massachusetts cannabis control data, from January 1 – 28, 2024, shows 116.2 million in gross sales. Overall, the state has generated more than $5.65 billion in gross sales to date since November 2018.

For information on applying for a marijuana establishment, the Commission launched a free technical assistance and training program called the Social Equity Program that began February 5th.
